Home Remedies for Sprained Ankle

Ankle sprain is referred to the condition when the ligaments in the ankle joint are torn. Generally, the lateral ligaments are more prone to be affected than the others. It is also reported that ankle is the most common joints of the body which have to be suffered from this condition during vast variety of physical activities. Ankle sprain may occur concomitantly with the bone fracture. However, it is used to be the isolated lesions. The patients who suffer from this condition will complain about the pain on the lateral side of the ankle, swelling and on some case, bruise around the affected joint. Physician can easily diagnose this disease by collecting information from injury history, the symptoms and taking a radiograph to ensure that the bones are not be fractured. Care should be taken in some cases when the tendon (The structure that connect muscle to the bone instead of bone to bone like ligaments) or cartilage is also traumatized.
The time for patient recovery is depended on the severity of the condition. In general, the patients are categorized into two classes. The first group is for those who can bear weight after injury to certain extend. The second, however, have to totally rest and cannot be allowed to put any weight on their ankle. It may take 4 to six weeks to recover in milder condition, while more severe one may take up to several months. Although the main treatment is prescribed by the doctors, there are some home-made remedies which can help in promoting the healing process and decreasing the frustrated symptoms.
Ice can reduce blood flow to the affected site by making the blood vessels constrict. Therefore, it should be used in the first 24 or 48 hours after injury to ease pain, swelling and inflammation. Patients can wrap some ice cup inside the towel and then apply it over the sprained joint for about twenty minutes every two or three hours. Alternatively, you may use the cooled bottle taken from the fridge to place over the lesion or the package of frozen vegetable in case the ice cup is not available. One point should be note that you should not apply the ice pack directly onto the skin and hold it in one position in the same place for too long as it can cause skin burn.
After the injury, the ankle should be bandage with ACE with moderate force since it can reduce vasculature to the affected site in this way suppress the inflammation. However, it should not be wrapped too tightly due to the fact that blood is needed for healing process and that stop blood from reaching the areas can result in more severe problems. You can easily find the elastic tape from any pharmacy nearby, wrap it around the foot from toe to over the ankle about 5 centimeters. Keep this bandage for about one or two days until the swelling is recessed, but remember to remove it before going to bed or when noticing any sign of lack of blood supplying like numbness or inferior skin turns green.
Turmeric is not the unfamiliar name among the house wives as it has been used as the spice in many cultures all over the world. It is also considered as one of the most favorable remedies in traditional medicine. Needles to say, turmeric contains the great number of anti-inflammatory substances which can help control pain and swelling as well as accelerate the recovery in sprained patients. Furthermore, turmeric has anti-spasmodic property which means it can release stress on the affected muscle.
Patients can mix up one table spoon of turmeric powder with lime juice and some warm water into the paste. Applying this paste over the affected area for bout ten minutes, repeat two or three times per day up to one week when the swelling seems to almost disappear. Alternatively, you can add equal amount of turmeric with limestone, pour some water and warm this compound up on the stove. Then, put this mixture over the affected ankle and hold it by wrapping bandage around. In case of extremely pain, the patient can drink turmeric with warm milk two times per day for one week.
Similar to turmeric, garlic also can be useful in ankle sprain condition as it contains substantial amount of anti-inflammatory compounds. Patient can apply garlic juice directly over the skin of affected ankle for pain and swelling relief. However, to enhance the effectiveness of this spice, one should mix it with some kind of oil like almond or olive oil. Those oils not only increase the permeable ability of garlic, but they also contain anti-inflammatory property themselves. After apply over the skin, it is left for about ten minutes twice times per day up to one week. During this time, patients can gently massage their ankle for better pain and swelling relief either.
5. Epsom salt
Epsom salt is known to the store house of magnesium sulfate and therefore is considered one of the best home remedies for sprain. The crystal of magnesium can ease the inflamed muscle dramatically. Patients can easily buy Epsom salt in the pharmacy, dissolve about one cup of salt in warm water then plunge your ankle into the water for half an hour. Repeat two or three time per day for about three days until you notice pain as well as swelling have been driven away significantly.
