New Moon in Aquarius Jan 2017 ~ Crisis at The Crossroads
Posted by straightwoo
The New Moon in Aquarius occurs the 28th of January, 2017 at 8°15’’ of Aquarius.
Try checking what area of your birth chart is ruled by Aquarius or the house where your natal Saturn is found for more insight.
If you are new or new-ish to astrology, this post is a good place to start for generating your birth chart and checking out which part of your chart is being touched by this lunation.

NEW MOON IN AQUARIUS
“Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant.”
“Only a crisis, actual or perceived, produces real change.”
CRISIS AT THE CROSSROADS
Aquarius is not known for its sentimental nature.
More than any other, this is a sign that is continually prepared to sacrifice our sacred cows and focus on the future.
While it shares Saturn as its ruler with traditional-minded Capricorn, this is more or less where the similarities end. Whereas Capricorn respects, and even requires, the stability of established frameworks, Aquarius is stifled by them; Capricorn aims to achieve by following the rules, but Aquarius wants to innovate by breaking the rules and building them anew.
Constructing the future can be a dirty business, both wily and unforgiving, which is exactly why we need the perfectly nonplussed water-bearers to handle innovation for us. Future-making requires a ruthless, even heartless, biopsy of what is so that we may reach what could be.
Nostalgia need not apply; according to Aquarians, it only serves to jam the senses and distract from the important business of evolution. It was the Buddha who said you only lose what you cling to, and for the stereotypical Aquarius, ‘cling’ might as well be a four-letter word.
After the recent Full Moon in Cancer, which had a focus on feelings and likes a fair bit of ‘cling’, this New Moon in Aquarius is like hitting the pause button on our collective feels so that we can motor forward.
THIS IS THE ACT OF LOVE AQUARIUS HAS TO OFFER US: DETACHMENT.
IT’S NOT TOUCHY-FEELY AND IT WON’T INSPIRE A SONNET, BUT IT MIGHT JUST CHANGE YOUR WORLD.
And the New Moon in Aquarius might just change your world, if not alter your perception of it; the New Moon certainly carries fresh awareness with it, some of which might be relatively unappealing. Detachment normally makes it easy to evade our emotions, but at this lunation, it may feel more like an act of self-care.
What you’ll need at this lunation is not more information – of that you’ll have plenty – but rather a willingness to let go of whatever you were hoping for in exchange for what is already taking form in front of your eyes.
Mercury (communication, the mind) is cruising towards Pluto, leaving no stone unturned, and the lunation ruler Saturn (limits, boundaries) is in hard relationship to both Mars and Venus, possibly creating frustration or disappointment. Jupiter, however, is on hand to lend a sense of levity as well as wisdom (Jupiter sextile Saturn).
Sometimes we cannot manifest, ‘love & light’, or pray our way past the limits we meet on our path. We are not always meant to surmount the insurmountable, regardless of how many Instagram memes exist to convince us otherwise, and the limits that Saturn serves up are quite often very final.
The beauty of hitting a wall, of course, is the proverbial window we’re offered when the Gods close a door. Crisis can be a brutally effective change agent.
Right now, you’re at a kind of crossroads, and only you can decide how you’ll rebuild your future.
But build and rebuild you will, of that I have no doubt.
The future (and fate, too) is only what you make it.
CURRENT EVENTS + OTHER BITS
The cycle of death and rebirth has been a reoccurring theme between this New Moon and the last Full Moon. The astrology then seemed to suggest, or at least raise the question: are endings and beginnings two separate cycles, or just one fluid state?
At what point exactly can we determine that something has reached its end?
This chart echoes the theme of endings, and while some might meet one in 3D, there is also the opportunity to explore what you personally consider ‘the end’ or the point of no return.
Saturn, the lunation ruler, squares both Mars (drive, passion) and Venus (relating, attracting); the square to Venus is particularly strong, with an additional link between Venus and Chiron (pain, healing). Essentially, this is about an end or limit (Saturn) where we find ourselves in regards to what we want (Venus). Saturn is also still sitting in close conjunction to Juno, Goddess of Marriage.
My feeling is that the New Moon in Aquarius is very apt foreshadowing for the upcoming Venus retrograde. Happening in the fire sign of Aries, there may be questions about how we carve out our independence amidst relationships; with a final conjunction to Chiron at the end of the Venus retrograde, there may be a lot of endings indeed, or maybe, some healing. It’s important to remember what continues to reverberate from this reading and the last: all endings are just beginnings in disguise.
Many relationships, and even countries, need to reach crisis point before being able to envision a new structure.
The global surge of peaceful protests coincided with the Sun in humanitarian Aquarius and Mars in compassionate Pisces. For folks that are in activist-esque arenas, the coming month is a good one for making serious strides forward as Mars will enter its home sign Aries, and there will be plenty of Air (thoughts) and Fire (action) to aid you in your plans.
The future may be female, and it certainly makes a cracking t-shirt, but this has always been true. The Women’s March occurred with asteroids Osiris & Isis next to the Sun, which is interesting. Isis, not to be confused with the terrorist group that has usurped this great lady’s name, saved her husband Osiris from death (with her best girlfriend Nephyths, no less) and used her super-kundalini-magick to bring him back to life just long enough so she could create a new baby. Women have been birthing the future since the beginning of time.
On another not-so-shiny note, Saturn is next to asteroid Astraea, which alternatively means ‘staying until the bitter end’ or ‘justice’; with a square to Venus, which can speak about women and women’s issues. This may not be a great day for women’s rights, or, women could put their feet down in some way against those in power/authority.
I hope it means we’ll be fighting until the bitter end.
Because bitter ends can always end up taking us to a better end.
